Buenos Aires is the capital and the largest and most important city in Argentina and ranks as the second largest metropolitan area in South America, after São Paulo. The city is located on the eastern shore of the River Plate, on the southeast coast of the South American continent. The city of Buenos Aires is not part of the Province of Buenos Aires and neither is its capital, but rather is an autonomous federal district. The Greater Buenos Aires is the third largest conurbation in Latin America, with a population of more than 13 million inhabitants. Buenos Aires is considered an alpha world city by 2008 inventory of the University of Loughborough (GaWC).
After the internal conflicts of the nineteenth century Buenos Aires was federalized and removed from the Province of Buenos Aires in 1880. The city limits were expanded to include the former towns of Belgrano and Flores are now neighborhoods.
The most important sector of the economy is services, which represents 74% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The manufacturing industry is the second, generating $ 26,454 million in 2006 – about 17% of GDP.
The city is also the most important cultural center in Argentina and one of the leading Latin America. The important cultural offer is represented in the great number of museums, theaters and libraries, some of them being the most representative of the country. It also highlights the academic activity, since some of the most important universities in Argentina have their headquarters in Buenos Aires. It should be noted that the city was named by UNESCO as a City of Design in 2005.
Buenos Aires was originally named after the sanctuary of “Nostra Signora di Bonaria” (Italian for “Our Lady of Bonaria”), Cagliari, Sardinia. In the Constitution of 1994, the city became autonomous, hence its formal name: Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, in Portuguese, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. People born in Buenos Aires are called “porteños.”
