Kyoto is located in a valley, part of the Yamashiro (or Kyoto) Basin, in the eastern part of the mountainous region known as the Tamba highlands. The Yamashiro Basin is surrounded on three sides by mountains known as Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, with a height just above 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) above sea level. This interior positioning results in hot summers and cold winters. There are three rivers in the basin, the Ujigawa to the south, the Katsuragawa to the west, and the Kamogawa to the east. Kyoto City takes up 17.9% of the land in the prefecture with an area of 827.9 km²

Kyoto sits atop a large natural water table that provides the city with ample freshwater wells. Due to large scale urbanization, the amount of rain draining into the table is dwindling and wells across the area are drying at an increasing rate.

The city is know because of the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012.

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art

As I was saying, lots of friends of mine moved to other countries, and one of them spent a while in Japan. Last year I received a postal from her, she visited the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art in Kawasaki, and I’m going to write something about it here.

The Taro Okamoto Museum of Art mainly collects and preserves the works of Taro Okamoto, and his parents Kanoko and Ippei. Exhibitions are held to encourage the questioning of accepted ideas and create new possibilities in art. Also lectures and workshops are held on related fields. The museum supports the creative activities of the citizens in the hope of contributing to and enhancing the richness in their lifestyles and the development of their cultural background.
